As you know, in December 2016 ICANN implemented a new Transfer Policy that included a new change of registrant procedure that all gTLD registrars had to comply with. We have received feedback from many of our customers that this new process is burdensome. In response to these concerns, we spent the last few months reviewing how we can improve our processes while remaining compliant with the Transfer Policy. We’re happy to tell you that we’re in the process of making some final technical improvements and we intend to go live with these on 5th September 2017. Below is some additional information about the Transfer Policy and our planned improvements.
Designated Agent

The ICANN Transfer Policy allows the sponsoring registrar to serve as a Designated Agent (DA). The Designated Agent is specifically authorized by the Prior Registrant and New Registrant to make any change on its behalf, through consent that must be obtained from both individually at least once by the sponsoring registrar.

Improvements in Transfer process

The domain transfer authorization was formerly sent to the Admin contact. Starting 5 September 2017, this email notification will go to the registrant contact email address shown in the WHOIS. This email will have a link that will ask the registrant to agree to (1) acknowledging the transfer to proceed: and (2) authorizing the registrar to act as the DA on the Registrant's behalf. The Registrant will have to approve designating the registrar to act as the DA by using the Approve button on the page, which will look like this:

Improvements in Registrant Contact Modification in Control Panel

When modifying the name and/or company and/or email address details of the registrant, the user will be provided two options:

Registrant Authorization not required - Appoint Registrar as Designated Agent:

  • Registrar acts as Designated Agent and authorizes the change request. Under this option, the registrant cannot opt out of the 60-day lock.
  • If both the Prior Registrant and New Registrant authorized the registrar to serve as DA, the change request will apply immediately. If only one has authorized the registrar to serve as DA, the change will only occur after the Prior Registrant or New Registrant, whichever is required, consents to the requested change.
Registrant Authorization required - Maintain Status Quo:
  • As it currently is handled now, the Prior Registrant and New Registrant receive email messages asking to approve the change to the Registrant contact.
  • Option to opt out of 60-day lock will be provided to the registrant.

Regardless of which option is selected, notification of the completion of the change of registrant will be sent to both the Prior Registrant and New Registrant
