How to Forward an Email in SOGo Webmail

When you want to receive emails sent to a different email address, you have the option of setting up a forward or an alias. Below, we’ll explain the differences and guide you through the process of setting up email forwarding in SOGo Webmail.

Forward vs. Alias: What’s the Difference?

  • Forward: A forward sends email from one mailbox to any other email address, including addresses outside your domain. For example, emails sent to contact@example.com can be forwarded to example@gmail.com.
  • Alias: An alias allows you to receive emails from one or more alternate email addresses into a single mailbox within the same domain. For example, emails sent to contact@example.com, admin@example.com, and shop@example.com will all be received in the mailbox for yourname@example.com.

Forwarding Limitations

  • Aliases: There is no limit to the number of aliases you can have on a domain.
  • Forwards: You can have up to 1,000 mail forwards on a given domain. This can be 1,000 email addresses with one forward each, or one email address with 1,000 forwards.

Note: Using email forwarding to manage a mailing list is strongly discouraged. It’s better to use a third-party mailing list service to avoid your address being marked as spam.

Steps to Forward Your Email in SOGo Webmail

Forwarding addresses allow you to redirect mail from your domain’s email addresses to an external address. Follow these steps to set up email forwarding:

  1. Log in to SOGo Webmail:

    • Start by logging into your SOGo Webmail account at SOGo Webmail.
  2. Verify MX Records:

    • Before creating the forwarding address, ensure that your domain uses YMOZ MX servers. Check the DNS records for your domain to confirm that there is an MX record pointing to mail.ymoz.com.
  3. Access the Domain Settings:

    • From the left menu, choose “Domains”.
  4. Select the Domain:

    • Choose the domain that will have the new forwarding address from the list of domains.
  5. Navigate to Email Settings:

    • Click on the “Email” tab.
  6. Set Up Forwarding Addresses:

    • Click on “Forwarding addresses”.
    • If this is your first forward, click “Create a Forwarding Address”. If you have existing forwarding addresses, click the green “Create a Forwarding” button.
  7. Enter Forwarding Details:

    • Enter the email address you wish to forward from and the email address you wish to forward to. Separate multiple addresses with a comma.
  8. Finalize the Setup:

    • Click “Create” to complete the process.

Note: Emails forwarded will only appear in the final destination mailbox. If you want the messages to also appear in the original mailbox, add the original address as a recipient in the forward settings.

By following these steps, you can efficiently manage your email forwarding in SOGo Webmail, ensuring that you receive your emails wherever you prefer.
